A visit by yuku admins

It had been "in the making" for a long time. First they visited the office way out in CA, but they decided to visit one of the 'home workers' too. We arranged a visit many moons ago, and all the while I kept thinking oh I've got plenty of time to clean the house.

Right, right.. time has a way of sneaking up on us. The 'we're on our way' email woke me up and I started running around the place like crazy, trying to make it look halfway decent.
Sunday was the big day. A bunch of people from clubpogobadges paid me a visit.

The weather was quite cooperative, we had a picnic out on the back lawn, surrounded by super high weeds. While Neva relaxed in the lawn chair after lunch, we took off for a walk in my 'back yard' which is a few miles long. I took my guests for a climb up on my mountain, although they said it looked like a hill, I could hear a lot of huffing and puffing behind me :) We passed the beebalm field, a field in the middle of nowhere, glowing red with beebalm. It is one of the most beautiful corners on this property. They took some pictures, and we walked on.
We almost reached the top, when toasterwoman started to yodel. She's "special". I must say that I've never heard anyone yodel on my mountain. She claims that only a few trees fell, but I was afraid that the forest would collapse. At least it didn't attract any bears!

We took the path home for easy walking. The path goes from the woods to the north-side of the property, the view from the path onto the valley is breath-taking. Another stop for pictures..

Once back at the house, the group took off to go play miniature golf. We met at the casino the next day where we lost some money, except for toasterwoman who matter-of-factly stated that she had won $60
After a night of casino fun, we said our good-byes and promised to meet soon again.

It was a lovely experience to meet some people who have a message board at yuku, they gave a face to the thousands of people we help out.

The story behind a community.

When you browse the message boards, you find all kinds. Do you ever wonder how they got started? Do you ever wonder about their story? Here is one particularly heartwarming story.

Sunshine started in 2001 and just celebrated its 8th birthday.

The online support group friends international was created in 2001 by two women that met in cyberspace summer 2000 at another ezboard. It was a joint effort between an American and myself in Norway. The American co-founder said:

- Mosken and I have a dream, to have this little town in cyberspace, for all who are in need. That they can come and feel the comfort of having people around that understand our huge obstacles.

That was our main vision in 2001 and it still is. Common discussion topics on the board include medical information, coping strategies and personal experience related to chronic pain and similar illness and individual support for people in their daily struggle.

Many of the members suffer from reduced ability to sit because of chronic pain. After some years several of us became advocates for equal rights for people living with sitting problems. We already had unofficial term for this kind of disability in Norway, although it was not really recognized until 2008. However, one of our American moderators in San Francisco came up with at English term: sitting disability! We wrote an article about this in Wikipedia and today sitting disability is a term used all over the Internet and is slowly getting recognized in both Europe and America.

In 2007 we began working with the prospect of registering the support group as a volunteer organization. The constituating meeting with approval of the articles was held in spring 2008. A few weeks later the organization was officially registered. This fact opened for new possibilities. We began looking into new ways of being advocates for people suffering from sitting disability and at the same time making our organization known to the public.

We decided to do something that has never been done before: creating a brochure about sitting disability in Norway. These days we are finishing a 10 page application to apply for funding from a Norwegian organization that each year donate money to volunteer organizations. A group of four members from the board have been working on this since the beginning of 2009.

If we are so lucky to be accepted for the funding, we will create the brochure in the beginning of 2010. We'll be working together with a professional designer and a company that will print and distribute the brochures to several thousand recipients in Norway. In the meantime we will be working on a website that is meant to inform about sitting disability and introduce people to our online support group.

The brochure will inform about sitting disability, equality, accessibility and human rights for people with any kind of disability, including people with sitting problems. The purpose is to raise the awareness for both the people that suffers from this disability and Society.

Society has gradually become used to people in wheelchairs and people with reduced mobility in general. There has been a progress in both awareness, accessibility and legislation for people with mobility problems.

It is now time to draw the attention to one of the most notable disabilities for people with chronic pain problems: the reduced ability to sit. A person with a sitting disability caused by excessive pain, is unable to sit or stand for long periods of time, and will thus have a need to lie down. The specific problems for persons with sitting disability are usually not addressed anywhere in research, legal documents, accessibility or anti-discrimination laws.

We hope that our advocate work and the brochure project will be steps towards changing the situation for people with sitting disability towards a better life and increased participation in society!

Many AOL boards have closed

It sounds familiar, after the demise of MSN groups, now AOL has also closed a lot of their boards.

I'm telling you, they're nice folks over there. If you're from AOL and now lost without the message board you used to post at, try the aol board for refugees. Your friends are waiting for you there.

Some of the aol boards that had been closed on March 31st 2009 have now been brought back on line.

Social bookmarking

Just a couple of weeks ago, I accidentally deleted one of my largest bookmark folders. As time goes by, I keep looking for links that are no longer there, and one link at a time, I realise how much I lost. This could have been avoided. Even though it is too late to fill the ditch after the cow has already drowned, you should still fill that ditch to prevent the next cow from drowning.

The first part about that cow is a famous Dutch proverb, but I made up the second part, just for your entertainment.

Social bookmarking has many advantages and few disadvantages. The best thing about social bookmarking is that you'll never lose your bookmarks again (unless you keep them private and you forget your password but let's not go there)

You can access your bookmarks from anywhere, any time. How often are you at a friend's place, you want to show something but oh darn it, you got it bookmarked on the home computer and don't know the URL off the top of your head? Your social bookmarks will take care of that problem.

Social bookmarking is also a great way to share your favourite sites. You can use tags and find out who else has used the same tags. This is yet another way of meeting people with the same interests as yours.

Not so fast. Before you run off and check out the social bookmark sites, let me tell you about one more advantage.
Because of the tags, you can label your sites more accurately than search engine spiders ever could.

Why not bookmark your favourite sites and find other people who have the same sites bookmarked.
